While there are many back to school tips to prepare your child for the first day of school, free practical resources can be very
helpful to help your child to prepare themselves in advance of the big day. See the blog 10 Tips To Help Your Child With Special Needs Go Back To School for general advice on how to prepare for the big day.
I have put together some free social stories to help manage different types of rules and circumstances that a child can face. Sometimes children with Autism or other developmental disabilities may not know how to handle a situation or what to do.
The Easy To Use The Back To School Social Story Can Help.
1.Read the story to help prepare your child for the first day back to school.
While reading the story, answer questions, ask questions and talk about the expectations. I use this social story with my own son. We read them everyday. It helps him, to prepare for the big day. I have noticed Niam is feeling excited to go back to school. Download the I Can Go Back To School Social Story for Free.
2. It Can Be Fun To Go to School.
Going back to school does not have to be scary. It can be fun. Your child will meet a new teacher , make new friends to play. This can be a positive experience. I spoke to Niam’s new teacher before the first day of school, and was able to arrange a meeting with another girl in his special education class. This helped foster a relationship in advance and help with socialization.
3. There Will Be New Rules At School.
The Back To School Social Story does not describe the new rules of school. But this is very important for a child to understand. To not make the Back To School Social Story very long, we created a separate social story called I Can Follow Rules At School. This social story visually goes over some of the basic school rules. For example, no running, only walking, and holding the railing. This can be a book you download for free and laminate. I have made a binder of social stories for Niam and periodically go over them and discuss different school rules.
4. It is Fun To Learn And Go To New Classes
It is important to discuss transition with your child. In school there are many transitions like going to new classes, using different binders and walking from class to class. Use the social story to talk about the unique transitions for your child. It might be useful to make a checklist to help with transition.
Going Back To School can be overwhelming for children. There are many changes. There are many techniques and different visuals that can be used to help your child. Social stories is just one amongst many. Ideally pairing social stories with other evidence based methods is the best.
