The Autism Cure: ” Has Your Child Outgrown Autism?

Fact or Myth: Is there an Autism Cure? Where do I begin on this one.   To an autism parent, like myself, this is

a very loaded question with many hidden underlying meanings and emotions. Before we tackle the actual question, lets examine the underlying meaning.  Is Autism a disease? Is there a Autism Cure? If we say Autism is a disease are we implying there is a cure, and if so, does this mean there is no place in our society for persons with Autism.  Do we spend endless money and time on research looking for this so called “cure” or do we accept there are persons with Autism who require therapies, accommodation and supports and can participate in society.  While there is a argument for both, as a autism parent, I can tell you as my child is aging, he requires money spent on him to learn practical life skills like cooking, banking, household chores, job skills and, not to be driven around endlessly to different treatment centres in hope of finding a miracle autism cure to bring him back to “normalcy.”

How do you define normal anyways?

Does everyone fall in a black and white scenario or are we all inherently different and falling in the grey area?  Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have a speech ” autism cure ” to give my son more speech, but not at the expense of his well being. What do  I mean by this? I am not prepared to run around to treatment centres and try the next medical break through to see if maybe his autism can be mitigated by the next new autism cure fad.  Niam has only so much time in a day and, I financial resources, the question becomes how best to optimize time and resources? If the plan is not 100% fool proof, don’t call me or try to sell me another medical service. I am not interested. Been there done that.

Do Children Outgrow Autism and Is There A Cure?

We know autism has a strong genetic basis with a combination of various environmental influences. Having said that, I believe all therapies can help improve outcomes, but I do not believe there is a “autism cure” , in the way you take medicine for a health problem. It is important to help our children accept who they are, and prepare them to enter the world as young autism adults. I love my son for who he is and, all he brings to my life.  And that is all that is important.
