5 REASONS WHY “AGE APPROPRIATE” DOES NOT APPLY TO MY SON WITH AUTISM

“AGE APPROPRIATE” DOES NOT APPLY TO MY SON WITH AUTISM. Niam is 5’8″ tall, 13 years old, growing up physically, everyday making leaps and
bounds in education, understanding the environment, social connections,  making me one proud mom. Here lies the dichotomy,  as long as I analyze Niam to his own progress his progress slope is a robust growth curve. However,  comparing to a typical developing peer it dips, peaks, slows down and the cycle begins again.

THE REASONS WHY AGE APPROPRIATE SHOULD NOT APPLY TO MY SON WITH AUTISM

1. NIAM HAS NOT OUTGROWN THE KID’S MENU
Niam has outgrown the children’s menu with respect to age, from a restaurant’s perspective should not be allowed to order from the kid’s menu. But, Niam like many other children with Autism, as they grow, still have taste sensitivity issues. They do not like the complex tastes of food from the adult menu, and would prefer the simple foods from the kids menu. Some restaurants are understanding while others think I am trying to get a cheaper meal for my son. But at 5’6″ , the kids meals are too small for Niam, I often have to order two , or ask them to make into an adult portion.

2. NIAM LOVES CARTOON MOVIES
Niam loves watching cartoon movies, he has to be at the show on opening night, sometimes the movies are enjoyable for adults, many times, I am counting the minutes until it is over. Niam bought a Dory stuffed fish, brought her to the movies, to let her watch the show. I think he may have been the only child at the theatre.

3. NIAM LOVES TO BUY T-SHIRTS AND BACKPACKS OF HIS FAVOURITE CARTOON
Niam still loves to buy cartoons t-shirts of his favourite shows, and back packs, like Thomas The Train. I encourage him to wear them at home, or when he is around me to ensure no bullying takes place when I am not present.

4. NIAM LOVES TO CUDDLE HIS STUFFED ANIMALS
Niam still loves to buy stuffed animals, cuddle them, play with them and, I sometimes catch him talking to them. My older son, Rohan, often tells me to not encourage this activity , as it is not age appropriate, I still let him do it, his free time is his time to do what he enjoys, who am I to stop it.

5. NIAM STILL LOVES VIDEO GAMES PLAYED BY YOUNGER CHILDREN
Give Niam Super Mario and, he will never put it down, the new version is out, I want to get it for Niam, I know he will love it. I will have to move past the roadblocks from Rohan and his father.

As Niam grows up, I am being open to widening my understanding of social rules, understanding there is not a “one fit for all ” , as a society we have to start acknowledging everyone is different and,  be more flexible.
