In today’s world the reality is adults are living longer, well beyond their 70’s, a figure that gives me great relief,
sometimes at night, I lie in my bed and mathematically try to figure out, if I live to the age of 90, I can care for Niam until the age of 60, of course, I am banking on the fact I will be a healthy aging parent. This exercise I spin out in my head at least once a week may sound a bit crazy or over the top for most of my friends with typically developing kids, who will go on to live independent lives of their own, I wonder am I the only parent of an Autism child who counts the number of years they will live?
I think I may have gone a little off the deep end, I spent yesterday throwing away ALL my expensive make-up up to buy organic, not tested on animal beauty products, a move cheered by the environmentalist police, my son Rohan, who happens to live in my house and takes pictures of us doing all kinds of mistakes that ruin our habitat, and posts it on Facebook, Twitter and his blog, gotta love your kids. I have been drinking these disgusting kale smoothies with hemp milk, buying organic foods, taking a magnitude of vitamins and drinking excessive amounts of green tea to try to increase my longevity. My husband thinks I am OCD, as I write this, he may be on to something, I subject the entire family to the Oscar The Grouch looking drinks, have been racking up the credit cards on what my husband deems frivolous grocery spending and, wasting countless hours researching on vitamins to ward of every disease known to mankind, the side effect, Im wrinkle free if that counts for anything and, has nothing really to do with my Indian heritage and genes.
Writing this is quite therapeutic, it dawned on me, I might actually need to calm down, get some help, take a breather and enjoy the life in front of me, not let the unknown consume my thoughts, a difficult task for me, I love to day dream and think and pen my thoughts.
Many of us are planning for long term care for our children, I met a banker at a charity event last week, who told me about a friend who had put a meticously thought out trust fund together, with 8 people to oversee the care of their child, the youngest being 3 on the list. I came home, it was a sleepless night, it made me think ” Am I doing enough?”, I have to really sit down and plan better. I encourage all of my readers to not only start thinking, but start writing down on paper with a lawyer, the long term care of your child, it is very important, and for me, I realized I just cannot bank on my older son to take care of my younger son, life is very uncertain, my planning has to be better and more thought out.

I am so proud of Niam’s progress as a child, he keeps surprising me everyday, see his beautiful art and the next time you have a gift to give, think of Niam and supporting him, he is 13 with minimal speech and comprehension, against all odds, he has become a budding artist, visit his website.
