HAVING AUTISM CAN BE POSITIVE
My journey to this point in my life has been rather uncommon for most folks. I experienced the typical emotions of having a child with a diagnosis of Autism and, this long winding road has led to my ultimate happiness of discovering the authentic realities of having a child rich in emotions, quirkiness, lacking in social etiquette, sensory processing disorder and limited speech. The truth is, this is Niam, he is loved and accepted just as he is, and his paintings are beautiful because of it.
In the media, I have been reading coverage of Autism and Employment, Autism Youths and Adults stepping out of their limited diagnosis and empowering the world with their accomplishments, it is encouraging , exciting to say the least. What upsets me are millions of shares and likes of Facebook posts of a person who was “kind” to a person with Autism. The day this diminishes is the day, true acceptance will hit our society with such velocity we won’t care about random acts of kindness on our charitable seeking children, as being kind and having tolerance should be an act one does on a regular basis.
I appreciate all the friends and random people I meet who offer“intellectual” advice on how to cure my son, let it be known today, I am not looking for a cure. I do believe in bettering the life of my son, as I would want for my other child, healthy diets, exercise, education, work experience and employment opportunities.
Today is a new day. Looking back to yesterday and having regrets is pointless, yesterday is gone and will not come back as hard as you try, as many magic spells you cast, prayers and wishes. Only today can bring a new beginning. Every day is a joy with Niam, his accomplishments, his struggles and his love of Art.
Emphasizing the importance of love, acceptance, happiness and true acceptance is imperative if we as a society are to forge forward on basic human rights issues and not forget basic principles of humanity. Realistic stories can be inspiring, motivating and allows the reader to to be part of a incredible journey bringing us one step closer as a society to reach our goals. Thank you Niam for bringing me there.
