AUTISM AND TECHNOLOGY

There is much debate about the use of technology and autism, how much is too much, does technology make autism worse, or are there life long impacting benefits beyond our imagination. The debate is real, but for parents who do not have children with autism and are have little autism awareness, seeing a child cradling a tablet like a puppy everywhere he goes may seem like bad parenting. The truth is technology has opened door for our children beyond imagination.

Let us take my son, Niam, he has learned all about the world through his tablet, where learning nursery rhymes were difficult, he now knows all the songs played on the radio, in addition, to loving New Wave Songs from the 80’s, an era dear to me. If you asked me 10 years ago, while I watched my son struggling to learn words for a song, I could have never imagined he would know artist names, songs and know words of not one but multiple songs.

Singing and playing music in the car, we all join in as a family, so much fun! Niam picks the songs and has full control! Singing and playing music in the car, we all join in as a family, so much fun! Niam picks the songs and has full control!

It may seem bad parenting when my son is standing in line playing Star Wars , let me tell you , I am one proud mother, my son is able to STAND in line on his own. The tablet travels with us on vacations, in the back seat of the car, to restaurants , grand parents homes and literally anywhere we go. Niam does do many activities without the tablet, and is not on it all day, at the same time it is important to  recognize the important role it plays in his life, the focus of this blog.

We are on a beautiful boat on a snorkelling trip and Niam has his tablet.  He is taking pictures for the first time. He learned to take pictures after downloading and playing the #LookAtMe #Samsung APP. Niam uses the tablet to schedule his day, to organize himself, watch the latest youtube video and be informed on the latest news that is important to him, be it opening days of movies, the latest song release or watching painting videos. The world is his oyster, learning is at his finger tips, just ask Salmon from Khan Academy, the wonders of Education and Technology.

As I put my son to sleep tonight, I do not regret or feel guilty in anyway for allowing Niam to have more technology time than his typically developing peers. I tell myself it is important to teach the way one learns and, if this is helping my son who am I to deny it.
